For decades, “chargemaster” fiction and secret insurer contracts made honest comparison shopping nearly impossible. Federal transparency rules nudged the industry; cash-pay surgery centers and imaging clinics kicked the door open.
Cash prices are often a fraction of the “insurance rate” after the deductible. Tools like Healthcare Bluebook and publicly posted surgery menus let families plan. That is not radical. That is normal commerce — the kind every other industry already practices.
Christians talking about stewardship should care about this. Paying $1,800 for a procedure that another facility posts at $450 is not virtuous suffering. It is waste. Transparency returns moral agency to the patient.
